Duke wins by 56 over Carson-Newman, which will visit Tar Heels Monday night

Posted by on Sun, Nov 7, 2010 at 8:06 PM

Duke finished the exhibition part of its women’s basketball season on a high note, blasting Carson-Newman 121-65 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the strength of seven players in double figures.

Duke freshman guard Chloe Wells
The Division II Eagles, who have lost their first two exhibition games to Tennessee and now Duke, will play their last one tonight at 6 when they take on UNC at Carmichael Arena. Carson-Newman is the alma mater of UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell.

Chloe Wells had 24 points and nine steals and Tricia Liston 20 points for Duke, while Kathleen Scheer added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Jasmine Thomas added 16 points for Duke followed by freshman Haley Peters with 12, Karima Christmas with 11 and Krystal Thomas 10. Catlin Moore had 19 points and Mandy Mendenhall 16 for the Eagles.

“(It was) just a good, strong team game for us today,” Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “We’ve been working on a lot of things: better energy, better looking for each other. I think 30 assists is outstanding and indicative of the direction we want to move in terms of creating for each other and finding each other. When you make the right pass or you make the extra pass or you look for your teammate, shooting percentages tend to go up.

“I just thought that Tricia and Chloe were very strong energy-wise, very positive and very aggressive. Jas (Thomas) obviously, was very aggressive herself, and finding other people with the assists. Those are the kind of stats that Jas can obviously create and do.”

The No. 6 Blue Devils open the regular season at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Brigham Young.
