In contrast to the recent run of high-profile signings from Europe and the MLS, the RailHawks reached down and made a low-key move today of the sort that could end up looking like an extremely shrewd acquisition. Joseph Kabwe, who is the third African signed to this squad, comes to the RailHawks after several years with the USL-2 power Charlotte Eagles.

His career thus far has been solid if unspectacular: He played his college ball on the lower rungs of the NCAA Division I, at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., making the Big South's second team his senior year. He followed that with three seasons with Charlotte, scoring three goals and tallying five assists last year for a squad that finished atop the league table.

There are a couple of reasons to suggest Martin Rennie knows exactly what he's getting. Rennie has his own playing history with that squad, for starters. And, in last August's USL-2 title game, in which his Cleveland City Stars prevailed 2-1, Kabwe scored the lone goal for the Eagles.

The squad is now up to 20 players.
