Thanks for Nothing, Florence: The Durham Bulls Will Play All Five Games of the Governors’ Cup on the Road

Posted by on Tue, Sep 11, 2018 at 4:22 PM

Tonight, the Durham Bulls will take to Scranton’s PNC Field for game one of the Governors’ Cup Finals against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (booooooooooooooooooo). The winner of the best-of-five series—the first two games of which were to be played in Scranton, the rest in Durham—will claim the title of champion of the International League, one of two Triple-A leagues.

Essentially, this is the World Series of the minor leagues. The Bulls won it last year, they’re gonna do it again this year, and we working forward to watching them do it at DBAP on Thursday night (is it too optimistic to predict a sweep?). Enter Florence, which, in addition to disrupting all of our weekend plans and forcing us to fight each other in a Costco deathmatch for the last forty-eight pack of Aquafina, has also compelled the baseball gods to insist that the Bulls win this chip entirely on the road.

All five games, the Bulls announced this afternoon, will be played in Scranton, a city best known as the birthplace of Joe Biden and home of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

“We are obviously disappointed in losing up to three games on our home field, especially for a championship series,” Durham Bulls vice president Mike Birling said in a statement. “However, nothing is more important to us than the safety of our fans, players, coaches, and staff. In working with the International League office and the RailRiders staff, we found an option that keeps all parties safe. We thank everyone for their hard work the last few days in finding a solution, and hope the Bulls can capture another title in Scranton.”

If you’ve purchased tickets for the Bulls game and you’re dedicated enough to make the seven-hour, thirty-two-minute drive to PNC Field, you can exchange them at the PNC Field box office. Or, if you purchased individual tickets, you can get a refund at the conclusion of the finals. Fans who purchased a playoff package will have a credit applied to a 2019 membership plan.

Any questions? Call the Bulls at 919-956-BULL ext. 3.

Games one through four start at 6:35 p.m. You can stream the games on MiLB.tv or listen to them on durhambulls.com or on the radio at 96.5 FM in Durham or 99.3 FM in Raleigh.
