Analysis: Under GOP Tax Plan, Tens of Thousands of Triangle Residents Would Lose Health Care Coverage

Posted by on Fri, Dec 8, 2017 at 6:12 AM

Tens of thousands of Triangle residents could lose health coverage if the Senate's version of the tax bill passes, according to an analysis by the left-leaning Center for American Progress. That's due to a provision in the GOP bill that would eliminate the Affordable Care Act's much-loathed individual mandate, which requires everyone to purchase health insurance. The move would likely result in fewer sign-ups among young, healthy people and higher costs for people bound by health necessity to remain in the individual market.

If the individual mandate is slashed, millions of Americans could lose insurance over the next decade, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates: four million fewer people would have coverage in 2019, and thirteen million fewer will be covered by 2025. CAP's analysis broke down coverage reductions by congressional districts, estimating reductions for 35,400 people in U.S. Representative David Price's district, which covers parts of Wake, Durham, and Orange counties; 32,100 for G.K. Butterfield’s district, which covers parts of Durham; and 31,400 for George Holding’s district, which includes parts of Wake County. Tallied up, that's almost 100,000 people.

“Every day, the American people learn more about the staggering consequences of the GOP tax scam,”  Price said in a press release in response to CAP's data. “With the addition of the healthcare provisions, this bill becomes downright deadly. Rather than crafting a bipartisan plan that supports the middle class, Republicans in Congress have fast-tracked an overhaul of the U.S. tax code based on voodoo trickle-down economics. As the Republicans go to conference on this bill, I will continue to speak out for the 408,000 North Carolinians poised to lose healthcare coverage with the passage of this scam.”
