Durham Man Detained By ICE Has Been Moved Out of State

Posted by on Thu, Mar 30, 2017 at 11:01 AM

Edwin Reyes-Guillen, an undocumented immigrant detained in Durham Tuesday while law enforcement was looking for a different man near his brother's apartment, has been moved to a South Carolina jail.

Reyes-Guillen, twenty-six, was being held at the Forsyth County Detention Facility until Wednesday, when he was moved to the York County Detention Center in York, South Carolina. Jail records show he was booked there at about three-thirty p.m., and a jail employee confirmed this morning that he was still there.

Reyes-Guillen was taken into custody at Duke Manor apartments early Tuesday morning by a U.S. Marshals Task Force, which includes Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE spokesperson Bryan Cox told the INDY yesterday that the officers were there looking for a fugitive wanted for murder when they "encountered" Reyes-Guillen. Cox confirmed that this is Reyes-Guillen's first encounter with the immigration agency. The N.C. Department of Public Safety shows no criminal convictions under Reyes-Guillen's name, and he has no arrest history with the Durham Police Department.

According to ICE and the man's brother and sister-in-law, he ran from officers when they tried to detain him.

Elda Bonilla, Reyes-Guillen's sister-in-law, who filmed his detention on a cell phone, says that officers then searched her apartment and convinced her and husband to have Reyes-Guillen return to the apartment to prove he was not the wanted man.

Reyes-Guillen was brought to the ground by officers, said Bonilla and her husband, Reyes-Guillen's brother, Mario Ramon-Reyes, injuring his head. Officers searched his wallet before taking him away.

The video of the detention has been shared by advocacy group Alerta Migratoria, which is helping the family navigate the situation.
