A seventeen-year-old found dead in a Durham County jail cell this morning apparently committed suicide, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Uniece Glenae Fennell was found unresponsive at about three thirty a.m. She was jailed July 26 after being charged with the murder of a nineteen-year-old.

“Paramedics responded to the facility and pronounced her dead at the scene. Preliminary evidence collected at the scene and statements given to detectives from the detention staff indicated that the cause of death was a suicide,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The agency did not specify how she died.

The State Bureau of Investigation was notified, and the Office of the State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

“It is standard practice for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a death investigation. The Sheriff’s Office will submit its findings to the NC Department of Health and Human Services,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Fennell was one of three people charged in the July 10 drive-by shooting that killed Andre Bond.

On August 4, she was indicted for discharging a weapon into an occupied residence and discharging a firearm with a pattern of street gang activity, the Sheriff’s Office said.

According to WRAL, there were no suicides at the Durham County jail in 2015 or 2016. However, as the INDY reported last year, a 2013 suicide by inmate Terry Demetrius Lee, who tied a bed sheet to the bars on his cell window and hanged himself, was very likely preventable.
