The Morning Roundup: Report Claims Charlotte Cops Shot Scott in Back

Posted by on Tue, Nov 15, 2016 at 8:19 AM

It's the one-week anniversary of the apocalypse and we're still here. Let's mark that achievement with a quick look at the headlines, shall we?

1) President Obama tries to calm NATO, Europe down.

It's a tall order, having to explain to world leaders what to expect from a Donald Trump White House. But President Barack Obama is overseas doing just that. From CNN:
"In my conversation with the President-elect, he expressed a great interest in maintaining our core strategic relationships," Obama said. "And so one of the messages I will be able to deliver is his commitment to NATO and the Transatlantic Alliance. I think that's one of the most important functions I can serve at this stage, during this trip, is to let them know that there is no weakening of resolve when it comes to America's commitment to maintaining a strong and robust NATO relationship, and a recognition that those alliances aren't just good for Europe, they're good for the United States, and they're vital for the world."
Good luck, Mr. President. Didn't think anything could be more difficult than dealing with a Republican Congress, did ya?

2) Report: Charlotte cops shot Keith Lamont Scott in the back.

The autopsy performed on the body of Keith Lamont Scott was released Monday and it doesn't look good for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD. From the Charlotte Observer:
Gunshot wounds to the back and abdomen killed Keith Lamont Scott, the black Charlotte man shot by police on Sept. 20, a county autopsy report says.
The report, released Monday, shows Scott, 43, suffered gunshots to his left upper back, the front of his left abdomen and to the back of his left wrist.
City officials won't say whether or not charges will be filed against the shooter, who sparked protests that saw the Queen City make national headlines.

3) Novelist, former Durham mayoral candidate will stand trial again.

Despite his best effort to convince a judge that he should remain out of prison, once-convicted murderer Mike Peterson will, again, face a jury. From the N&O:
Mike Peterson, a former Durham newspaper columnist and novelist, on Monday lost his latest attempt to have his murder case dismissed.
A second trial is slated for May on allegations that he killed his wife in December 2001 inside the couple’s Durham home.
Much has changed since then for Peterson, 73, who has maintained throughout that he did not kill Kathleen Peterson, a Nortel employee who had been his wife for the five years prior to her death. Peterson was convicted of her murder in 2003, spent eight years in prison, then won a new trial and was released in 2011.
4) George W. Bush gets a puppy.

I know what you're thinking. How is this newsworthy? Well, it isn't. But hey, it took your mind off a Trump presidency for a few seconds, didn't it? You're welcome.

And on that, that's all for today. Bye for now.
