Good news for the "Bring Wegmans to the NC Triangle Area - Please" Facebook group: the grocery retailer announced yesterday that it intends to open a new store in Chapel Hill in the next few years.

The spot it has selected is on U.S. 15-501, just east of the Wendy's—you know the Wendy's—on a piece of property currently occupied by Performance AutoMall, which is moving to The Streets at Southpoint next year.

Leaders from the Town of Chapel Hill and the Orange County Board of Commissioners announced the news in a release yesterday.

“We are working proactively to bring new retail to our town and believe that Wegmans will further solidify Chapel Hill as a regional foodie destination,” said Mayor Pam Hemminger.

Earl McKee, Orange County Board of Commissioners, said: "We are working together to attract companies that create diversified, well-paying employment opportunities for our residents. This incentive proposal will help us take another step toward making Orange County more competitive—especially by adding a substantial market for farmers and food producers.”

Wegmans, headquartered in Rochester, New York, has just shy of one hundred stores in the United States, most of them in the Northeast. Earlier this year, it announced plans to open a store in Cary. Wegmans is consistently ranked as one of the most beloved companies in the country.

The details have yet to be ironed out in Chapel Hill. Both town and county officials will convene in the coming weeks to discuss the specifics of the deal. According to the release, the Leon Capital Group will buy the fourteen-acre property from Hendrick Automotive and plans to sink $30 million into redeveloping it. More numbers:

*The project would be 120,000 square feet

*It could bring in as much as $1.7 million per year in new property and sales taxes once up and running.

*The town and county are considering $4 million in economic incentives to aid in the $30 million redevelopment process of the site.

*Wegmans expects the Chapel Hill store will create 350 full-time jobs that will pay a minimum of $12 an hour.

More on this here, where you can also experience a big LOL when you read that the town cites as one of the benefits of the Wegmans redevelopment that it "solidifies Chapel Hill’s status as a foodie place."

Where was "foodie place" when they were looking for a new slogan earlier this year?
