Seventeen Republicans Filed to Run For George Holding's Old Seat. Seventeen.

Posted by on Fri, Mar 25, 2016 at 1:58 PM

If that didn't register for whatever reason, let me repeat: seventeen Republicans filed to run for Congressman George Holding's 13th District seat in the special Congressional primary. Holding, you'll remember, is running against his Republican colleague, Congresswoman Renee Ellmers, in the 2nd District.

The clowncar of Republican candidates running to replace Holding is headed by Kay "RINO Hunter" Daly, North Carolina Sen. Andrew Brock, NC Reps. John Blust, Julia Howard and Harry Warren, 2014 US Senate candidate Jim Snyder, Guilford County Commissioner Hank Henning, Iredell County Register of Deeds Matt McCall, and, uh...a bunch of other people.

Notable Democrats running in the 13th District primary - there are five - include 2016 US Senate candidate Kevin Griffin of Durham and Labor Commissioner candidate Mazie Ferguson, who both lost their races on March 15th.

In the 2nd District, Holding and Ellmers will face off against former Senate candidate Greg Brannon, who lost in both the 2014 and 2016 Republican primaries.

Why are so many people running this time around? It's hard to say, but not much can be lost from running in a special election, as Brock, Blust, Howard and Warren aren't jeopardizing their legislature seats by running.

You can view the full list of candidates at the state Board of Elections website

UPDATE: NC Rep. Julia Howard also filed to run in the 13th. This blog has been updated to reflect that.
