With the election looming, Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town shuns incumbents in its endorsements

Posted by on Mon, Sep 21, 2015 at 4:06 PM

No big surprises today, as the Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town, better known as CHALT, announced its formal endorsements in the town's races this fall.

The grassroots group, which has hinged its platform on criticism of the Town Council and Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt, endorsed a spate of challengers for the November election, shunning incumbents altogether.

The organization chose Pam Hemminger, a former county commissioner and school board member, in the race for mayor. Hemminger is running against Kleinschmidt and challenger Gary Kahn, who the Indy profiled this month, for the mayor's seat.

CHALT has focused its outreach on blasting the town's current leaders, complaining of overly expensive housing, runaway developer-driven building and a lack of responsiveness to town residents.

"We kept asking our friends and neighbors if they like the way Chapel Hill is changing," said Tom Henkel, a CHALT organizer. "No one said 'yes.'"

And with four seats open on the Town Council this year, CHALT also endorsed three challengers in Nancy Oates, David Schwartz and Jessica Anderson.

These aren't surprise picks, particularly since Schwartz co-founded CHALT.

Also running in that race would be incumbents Donna Bell, Jim Ward and Lee Storrow, as well as challengers Adam Jones, Paul Neebe and Michael Parker. Look for the Indy's endorsements in the Chapel Hill races in our Oct. 21 issue.
