Fewer North Carolinians homeless in 2014, says U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Posted by on Mon, Nov 3, 2014 at 11:43 AM

The number of homeless people, including veterans, in North Carolina has decreased 5.6 percent over last year, according to a federal report released last week.

An estimated 11,491 homeless people were living in North Carolina this year, compared with 12,168 in 2013. The figures are based on point-in-time counts conducted each January by state and local agencies and nonprofits. The results were released in a report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2014 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress.

However, that number could be an undercount. For example, when Durham conducted its point-in-time count last January, a snowstorm had hit, forcing volunteers to tally only the people living in the shelters.

The North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness has data broken down by county, as well as gender, ethnicity, veteran status and other factors.

Nearly 1,200 people were homeless in Wake County, 68 of them chronically so. Within the total number of homeless, 65 did not have a permanent place to live within a month of being discharged from jail or prison Another 46 were on the street after being released from mental health or substance abuse centers.

In Durham, 758 people reported being homeless, 82 of them chronically. Among the homeless were 130 veterans, 153 were mentally ill and 24 were victims of domestic violence.

In Orange, of the 108 homeless people, 12 of them were African-American male veterans. Nearly 50 homeless people were mentally ill and 14 were victims of domestic violence.

Nationwide, 578,424 people were homeless on a single night in 2014.
