Two new dismissals reported following inmate's death

Posted by on Tue, Sep 30, 2014 at 12:02 PM

The Indy has learned of two additional dismissals in the ongoing fallout from a North Carolina inmate's death in March.

N.C. Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Pam Walker confirmed this week that Roger Moose, assistant superintendent for custody and operations at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, and John Monguillot, assister director of mental health in DPS' Western Region, have been fired. Moose was let go on July 10, and Monguillot was dismissed on Sept. 3.

The investigation is ongoing into the death of 53-year-old Michael Anthony Kerr, who had spent nearly a month in solitary confinement. Kerr was being transferred from Alexander Correctional to Raleigh's Central Prison when he died. An autopsy report last week declared dehydration to be the cause of death.

Moose and Monguillot's dismissals bring the total job losses to nine, in addition to two resignations, since the Indy reported Kerr's death in April. Another 20 to 30 workers have been disciplined or reassigned. Read more on Kerr's death and the apparent reforms on the way in tomorrow's Indy.
