Perdue Appoints Eddie Speas General Counsel to the Office of the Governor

Governor-elect Bev Perdue today announced that she is appointing Eddie Speas as General Council to the Office of the Governor.

“Mr. Speas is an accomplished attorney and dedicated public servant,” said Governor-elect Perdue. “He will help ensure my administration operates both openly and ethically.”

Mr. Speas has more than thirty years of legal experience in both the executive and legislative branches of North Carolina’s State Government. Currently Mr. Speas is a partner at Poyner Spruill, LLP. Since joining the firm in 2004, he has focused his practice on helping clients with government related issues.

Prior to joining Poyner Spruill, Mr. Speas was with the Office of the Attorney General of North Carolina from 1971 to 2003.  During that time he served as Special Deputy Attorney General and Head of the Education Section from 1975 to 1990, as the Senior Deputy Attorney General and Head of the Special Litigation/Education Division from 1990 to 1998, and as the Chief Deputy Attorney General from 1998 to 2003.

Speas holds both his B.A. and J.D. from Wake Forest University.

“It’s an honor to be part of Governor-elect Perdue’s administration,” said Speas. “I believe in Bev Perdue’s vision for North Carolina and I’m excited about helping her make it a reality.”
