US Rep Brad Miller signs on to important LGBT bill

Posted by on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:05 AM

The Indy published a story Wednesday about bi-national, same-sex couples living in exile because U.S. law doesn't recognize them as families. A bill in Congress, the Uniting American Families Act, would, as the Indy's Merrill Wolf reported, provide U.S. citizens the right to sponsor their partners for immigration, by adding the words "permanent partner" after every reference to "spouse" in the current law.

The same day, U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, who represents North Carolina's 13th District, joined 115 House members in co-sponsoring the bill. District 13 includes parts of Wake, Granville, Alamance, Rockingham and Guilford counties, and all of Person and Caswell counties.

Several other House members opted to co-sponsor the bill this week; Miller is the sole North Carolinian.

Miller and U.S. Rep. David Price will hold a joint town hall meeting & Q&A session sponsored by Western Wake Democrats. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2-4 p.m. at the Glenaire Retirement Center, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary.
