State ethics commission beset by ethics problems

Posted by on Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 3:52 PM

The State Auditor issued a damning report today on the NC Ethics Commission, alleging, among other breaches, that the Commission's Executive Director refused to grant the auditor's investigators "ready" access to records, that the General Counsel for the Lt. Governor's office was allowed to view a statement of economic interest report behind closed doors--a policy violation, and that a Commission office assistant was fired after noting in the public records log that those documents had been viewed in secret.

“This report not only confirms the Office of State Personnel’s study and the State Budget Office study that there are many internal problems and policy inconsistencies at the Ethics Commission, but paints a picture of potential destruction of evidence. I say ‘potential’ because the Commission is hiding facts from the public that may implicate or exonerate their past actions,” said State Auditor Leslie Merritt.
