Kool DJ Red Alert hits Five Star tomorrow night

Posted by on Fri, Oct 31, 2014 at 4:54 PM

For monthly fixes of partying to the sounds of some of hip-hop’s most famed DJs, like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Young Guru, Ali Shaheed Muhammad or Spinderella, the usual prescription has been 9th Wonder’s monthly 95 Live series inside the Asian restaurant Five Star. But on Saturday night, some different purveyors—The Amazing Soul Diggers and Mike G of The Jungle Brothers—will be responsible for bringing the noise, which, on this post-Halloween occasion, will feature the legendary hip-hop fixture, Kool DJ Red Alert, in Five Star’s deejay booth.

At age 57, the New York hip-hop radio pioneer and former manager of the “Native Tongues” collective (A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, etc.) continues to rock parties, shows and his Saturday night mix show slot on 107.5 WBLS. But more significantly, DJ Red Alert is credited with a 30-year run on the now-defunct radio station 98.7 Kiss-FM, where he had one of New York’s most influential radio mix shows and broke some of the most important records in hip-hop like “Rappin’ Duke,” “Roxanne, Roxanne,” and Boogie Down Production’s “South Bronx.” On April 29, 2012, DJ Red Alert played his final mix on Kiss-FM, before the station merged with its former rival, WBLS.
Listen below for a recording of that last show just to get an idea of what you’re in for on Saturday night.
