Local singer Kat Robichaud drafted for CeeLo's team on NBC's The Voice

Kat Robichaud has the Music (and Maybe The Voice?) in Her

Raleigh’s Kat Robichaud had the coaches of The Voice fighting over her on last week’s season premiere. After her rocking version of The Kiki Dee Band’s “I’ve Got the Music in Me,” suave Maroon 5 guy Adam Levine dubbed her “Raspy McRasperson." Christina Aguilera, meanwhile, tried to appeal to their shared passion for performing. Blake Shelton campaigned for her to make “the unlikely choice.” But it was CeeLo Green, ever a “lover not a fighter,” who won the rocker over.

“I think the reason that I picked CeeLo is I feel that he and I have so much in common vocally, and he’s going to be able to help me really hone my craft,” Robichaud said in an interview after the show. “As far as just having fun together, it’s going to be a blast. He’s such a great performer. The first time that I saw him was [on] the VMAs, when he came out dressed as Darth Vader.”

That CeeLo’s theatrical stylings called to Robichaud should be no surprise for fans of her former band, The Design. After seven years together, that act broke up this past October, making room for her to audition for the show. As we noted in our review of The Design’s last release, Young America, Robichaud packs a two-punch of vocal prowess and showmanship. She hopes that pair makes for a winning combination this season.

Robichaud also earned love from 2012 Voice runner-up, Terry McDermott:

For now, Robichauld is waiting anxiously on Team CeeLo’s bench for the Blind Auditions to turn into Battle Rounds. Those head-to-head sing-offs begin Oct. 14, with R&B smooth talker Miguel tapped to be CeeLo’s special guest mentor. Until then, listeners can purchase Robichaud’s Voice single, “I’ve Got the Music in Me,” or catch up on her work with The Design before she became a new Hopeful.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
