Lorenzo Ferguson’s orbit with The Foreign Exchange became clear in 2008, when he and leader Phonte Coleman released the Zo! & Tigallo Love the 80’s covers project. Satirical on the surface, the album showcased the pair’s serious affection for grits-and-gravy R&B composition. Since then, the multi-instrumentalist producer has made himself at home on the +FE Music label, releasing the second and third efforts in his cover series and two albums of original soul gems, SunStorm and ManMade. While he’s just visiting Raleigh, one of his frequent collaborators, vocalist Carmen Rodgers, joins him for the great new series, Caramel City. —Eric Tullis
