Re: “Ann Fessler's adoption project, in print and on display in Durham

I would like to commend Ann Fessler on her exhibits and the importance they bring to what happened to mothers who lost their baby ONLY because they were unprotected by not being young, unmarried and unmanned. Unfortunately, these same things are happening to young women today in the form of "open" adoptions and exploytation of a pregnant woman for her baby. Not because anyone cares about the mother and child's well being. This is a part of the American adoption happy culture MANY do not want to hear much less acknowledge. The truth be known many women we forced, coerced and literally had their babies taken without the benefit of a courtroom, a judge, an attorney or any other form of support. Even a criminal gets his day in court! WE as women were being treated worse than a criminals for getting pregnant and giving birth! What is wrong with a society that won't even acknowledge this injustice. I can tell you whats wrong. Adoption is a big business supported by lobbyists with millions coming from our government with subsides and adoption welfare support coming from PUBLIC funds,,social security funds used to separate mothers and babies. If I had my way my tax money would be spent on supporting natural families NOT supporting tearing families apart. Adoption causes MANY more problems that it solves. The financial drain alone on public money being one. Along with mental health services, jail systems are full of people that a torn from their natural families and placed with strangers all because someone is able to access the funds to adopt. The funds coming from OUR taxes. Wasn't that one of the reasons adoption first started..a woman couldn't be on welfare and pregnant? Now its anyone and they can get money and support from you and I. The happy every forever families adoptive families are a fallacy just like the mothers who lost their babies we drunks, street walkers, whores, or drug abusers. I was none of these just young seventeen and taken advantage of by those that should have protected me and my baby. Our society needs to wake up and learn the truths surrounding adoption. yts
