Youngblood Brass Band, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

When: Wed., Oct. 2, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5-7
Blending hip-hop, improv and punk influences, the nine-member Youngblood Brass Band does its best to upset expectations of brass bands. Dubbing their sound "riot jazz," the group attacks with a combination of spoken-word raps, raw percussion, driving horns and chanted commands. The Madison, Wis., band has traveled to Europe and played at some of the world's biggest festivals. Their aggressive energy and dynamic approach push their compositions beyond mash-up kitsch toward progressive, fully modern music. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong opens, and yes, that's their real name. —Ashley Melzer
