Young Man, Gray Young

When: Fri., Aug. 10, 9:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $8

Colin Caulfield's performance-identity-turned-band plays ambitious, hypersensitive art-pop, with all the expected big builds and introspective lyricism. There are synth-string swells, finger-plucked guitar lines and digitized or looped percussion. Even the upbeat numbers bear a soft-rock focus; this is emo's post-collegiate older cousin. It's very pretty, as is the music of opener Gray Young, though the local trio opts for a sort of U2-meets-Explosions in the Sky high-volume sparkle and punch. In a way, it's an odd pairing, in which meek and quiet follows loud and assertive. Pay $8 at 9:30 p.m. —Corbie Hill
