In 1936, playwrights George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart came up with a strange answer to the Great Depression: an out-and-out screwball farce in which three generations of a New York family collectively drop out of the rat race to pursue their oddest passions, including snake and stamp collecting, candy making, xylophone, ballet, and amateur fireworks. But unhappiness looms when non-eccentric granddaughter Alice falls for Tony, her rich boss's son, and the question arises: How can these families possibly be integrated?
