Romance

Bookish Naina (Deepika Padukone) joins a Himalayan trek with school friends and falls for footloose Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor). What do we demand from our romcoms? Characters who romance without the necessity of an infuriating Little Mermaid compromise (changing everything about themselves for the beloved). Ranbir's infectious charm redefines the genre's boy/man, as he counsels shy Naina, not to change to suit him, but to "start loving who you are." He may disdain a life of "dal chaval"—lentils and rice every day—but he encourages Naina to pursue her more conventional dreams. Thank you! Pritam's music is catchy, especially "Badtameez Dil" when heard after the show blasting from a filmgoer's van in the Cary Crossroads parking lot. Hey, Regal Cinemas: YJHD is almost three hours long: Reinstate the intermission!
