Yefim Bronfman

When: Sun., Nov. 2, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $10-$48
Pianist Yefim Bronfman is best known for his hulking presence; The New York Times recently referred to him as “a bear of a man,” and his nickname of “Fima” conjures the image of a gentle giant. But Bronfman’s sensitive performances contrast that macho virtuoso stereotype. In recent years, the pianist has championed living composers, but his Duke Performances program is a bit more warhorse-focused. Haydn’s ebullient Sonata No. 60 and Brahms’s stormy Piano Sonata No. 3 join Prokofiev’s blazing Sixth Sonata. They should make good fodder for Fima’s balance of fervor and restraint. —Will Robin
