Yann Tiersen, Shannon Wright

When: Mon., Feb. 14, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $18-20

Yann Tiersen has worked with some notable musicians (including Jane Birkin and members of both the Cocteau Twins and Tindersticks), and people who saw Amelie have heard his work. But the French composer and songwriter Yann Tiersen isn't exactly a household name in the states, though last year's Dust Lane made some inroads for him here. His music combines the stately pomp of his classical background with a genial whimsy. Opening act Shannon Wright collaborated with Tiersen on her self-titled album in 2004; older locals might remember her fronting Chapel Hill's Crowsdell back in the mid-'90s, but she has been going it alone for more than a decade now, and her knotty, uncompromising music has only improved with age. —David Raposa
