Wynton Marsalis & Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

When: Thu., Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m. and Fri., Oct. 4, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $39-119
Though still directed by legendary trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, this is the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as you've likely never seen or heard it before. These two nights kick off the first-ever tour of "Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration," performed just a handful of times since Marsalis composed it in 2008 for the bicentennial of Harlem's prominent, historically black Abyssinian Baptist Church. For this two-night stand, the 15-piece JLCO joins the 70-member Chorale Le Chateau on joyful gospel-jazz jubilations shaped by Marsalis' New Orleans upbringing, full of shouts and handclaps. —Spencer Griffith
