There's a very good reason the NCMA is playing Douglas Sirk's multiple-Oscar-nominated melodrama from 1956. Even though it's set in the oilfields of Texas, the movie's inspiration comes from right here in North Carolina. Sirk and screenwriter George Zuckerman took Robert Wilder's 1945 novel of the same name, a thinly veiled account of the scandal that surrounded the mysterious death of R.J. Reynolds tobacco heir Zachary Smith Reynolds, and moved the story to the Lone Star State, changing all the names and making a tawdry, sparklingly colorful potboiler out of it. One viewing of this movie, which stars frequent Sirk lead Rock Hudson along with Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone (who won an Oscar for her performance), and you'll see where Dallas, Dynasty and all those nighttime soaps from the '80s picked up their flair for deliciously dysfunctional drama. —Craig D.
