“There’s a fine line between disaster and the best-laid plans,” goes the mantra in the middle of “Whistlers and Sparklers.” That terrific tale of misadventure and perseverance serves as a thesis of sorts for I Never Thought It Would Go This Far, the excellent new LP from Southeastern favorites Wrinkle Neck Mules. Though the band’s twists of bluegrass and barroom rock, cold country and warm folk are interesting enough, Far possesses a wonderful lyrical perspicacity. Memories of the past and details of the present give rise to philosophical musings for the future, not unlike the existential exercises that helped make Sturgill Simpson a surprise star last year. —Grayson Haver Currin
