Durham emcees Trie Carter and Fresh Sutton have previously called themselves Little Brother's little brothers. As Wreck-N-Crew, their challenge has less to do with living up to that analogy than with sidestepping overglorification of the Triangle's hip-hop boomlet. They accomplish this on the recent 2AM—a hardcore, clinking toast to what the album's opener calls the "Brilliance of Inebriation." The standout track "The World in My Hands," one of the Triangle's strongest rap cuts of the year, flips a song about "pussy ruling the world" into a jam about taking control of the night's exploits. Wreck-N-Crew's overall intention is to present themselves as the Bull City's lethal rap vandals, a title they work to earn in the video for new single "Bone," set in the Rolling Hills/Southside area of Durham in front of the dilapidated J.A. Whitted Elementary School building and in a nearby graveyard. It doesn't get anymore thuggish-ruggish. The Real Laww hosts the night, which is dubbed "NC Showtime" and is presented by Blaze-A-Nickel and Spring Hill. Scienze, Lazurus and Bobby James round out the bill. —Eric Tullis
