Action/Adventure

The heart of Max Brooks' novel goes missing in a Hollywood adaptation more preoccupied with its star wattage than thought-provocation. Brad Pitt stars as a retired United Nations flack drafted back into action to combat a worldwide zombie pandemic. The film effectively conveys the precarious tapestry of our social fabric—pushed to extremes, the mob trumps all our semblances of security. Still, if World War Zzzzz were all PG-13 spectacle, at least it might be a suitable summer blockbuster. Instead, it's also a zombified bore full of cheap chills and tired tropes.
