World Beat Music Fest with Dub Addis, Alex Weiss & Different Drum, Diali Cissokho

When: Fri., May 27, 9:15 p.m. 2011
Price: $8-10

Based in Durham but rooted in Ethiopia, Dub Addis organized this gathering of like-minded locals either born in Africa or influenced by its music. The veteran sextet incorporates African traditions into roots reggae by teaming a three-piece horn section with polyrhythms and island grooves; tonight, they headline. Senegalese kora player Diali Cissokho performs with Kairaba!, a percussive Carrboro five-piece that sticks closer to the West African griot tradition from which he descends. Jubilant melodies and dance-friendly rhythms assure the fledgling group's performance will be the night's most infectious. Alex Weiss & Different Drum stir a pot of mixed Afro-Caribbean sounds.—Spencer Griffith
