Words Run Deep

When: Fri., Oct. 8, 7:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Getting back to one's roots, and keeping them in mind while moving forward, has long been a theme of art and life. The 30-minute documentary Words Run Deep examines hip-hop's history, influence on mainstream culture and where it may go from here. Notable names lending their voices to the film include Christopher Martin of the late-'80s/ mid-'90s rap group Kid 'n Play (he's Play), Duke professor Mark Anthony Neal and Princeton scholar Cornel West, as well as spoken-word artists and musicians from North Carolina. The crew behind the camera boasts local talent too: Wake Forest resident and journalist Charles S. Martin produces. The film screens at 7:30 p.m., and a discussion panel and Q-and-A immediately follows. Donations of $5 support St. Joseph's Historic Foundation. —Sarah Ewald
