Woody Durham

When: Sat., Sept. 1, 10:30 a.m. 2012

If you were a child in North Carolina who followed basketball and football before the days of smartphones and Twitter and DVR, you probably have many vivid recollections of experiencing the Tar Heels by radio. For four decades until his retirement in April 2011, Woody Durham's genial, genteel voice accompanied the feats of stars ranging from Walter Davis to Tyler Hansbrough, Amos Lawrence to Lawrence Taylor. Now, he's sifted through his memories with Tar Heel Monthly publisher Adam Lucas to produce A Tar Heel Voice, an easygoing tome filled generously with photos of Durham with such luminaries as Charlie "Choo-Choo" Justice, Mack Brown, Dean, ol' Roy and the rest. Durham appears today at 10:30 a.m.; later this month, his appearances include stops at Flyleaf Books (Sept. 6) and McIntyre's (Sept. 15). —David Fellerath
