Wizard World is the national-franchise answer (and possible competitor) to the local, smaller, cheaper NC Comicon. We say "possible" because it's premature, if tempting, to make a David/Goliath, Jonah/Whale story—something Biblical, anyway—out of the corporate newcomer's Raleigh debut, where it hopes for attendance in the tens of thousands. The two conventions are spaced out in time and location (NC Comicon takes place at the Durham Convention Center each fall) and have different focuses. Wizard World features some comics creators, including locals such as Sandy Jarrell (Meteor Men) and big-name visitors such as '90s comics heartthrob Rob Liefeld, creator of Deadpool. But sci-fi and retro TV and film actors have a much stronger presence. You can get autographs from cast members of The Vampire Diaries, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Walking Dead. Lou Ferrigno, Bo from The Dukes of Hazzard, one Mighty Morphin Power Ranger (green, if it makes a difference to you), even Elvira—all will be on hand to sign things for an additional fee, depending on star power, of $25 to $150 (that's for former Doctor Who David Tennant). It's a glossy and commensurately pricey experience for those with sufficient money and fandom. You can probably attend without destroying NC Comicon, which should keep thriving by maintaining its intimate, comics-driven identity. Still, there are ways, such as non-compete contracts, that Wizard World could hurt NC Comicon. So if you attend only one convention this year and value local things, spend mindfully. —Brian Howe
