Will Hoge, Magic Mike

When: Wed., Dec. 5, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $12-15

Nashville songwriter Will Hoge's rootsy rock mines a working-class anthemic somewhere between the Black Crowes and John Mellencamp. Hoge scored a major-label deal in the early aughts, but his Atlantic solo debut's polish didn't mesh with his rough-and-tumble Southern country-rock predilections. A skilled guitarist, Hoge didn't truly find his voice until 2009's The Wreckage, written in the wake of a near-fatal accident; the album found him keenly balancing impassioned energy and wistful reflection. Last year's Number Seven maintained momentum, and his new Modern American Protest Music EP features a couple of terrific rabble-rousing, world-gone-wrong songs in "Founding Fathers," "Ballad of Trayvon Martin" and the humorous "Jesus Came to Tennessee." Tickets to the 9 p.m. show are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. —Chris Parker
