Will Goodyear: A Matter of Context

When: Fri., May 4 2012

Raleigh painter Will Goodyear returns to Adam Cave with new work from his historical investigations into North Carolina in general and its capital city in particular. Concerned with the Old North State's legislative inequities and urbanist patterns, Goodyear uses his trademark layering of material to both expose and obscure the racist and classist subterfuge that has informed the towns we live in. Goodyear's vocabulary of materials includes paint, beeswax, charcoal, oil pastel, photographic screen printing and even tobacco juice. His panels are nonetheless atmospheric and immaculate, grounded in a geography that's as much metaphor as reality. An opening reception with the artist in attendance runs 6 p.m.–9 p.m. The exhibit continues through June 16. —Chris Vitiello
