Wild at Heart: Our Affair with Nature

When: April 3-May 16 2015

WILD AT HEART | ELLIPSE/

ECLIPSE | CAUTIONARY TALE

ARTSPACE, RALEIGH | FRIDAY, APRIL 3

This First Friday, Artspace is bursting with new shows that bring with them a peculiarly synthetic kind of spring. Wild at Heart: Our Affair with Nature throws open Gallery One (through May 16) and Gallery Two (through May 23) to the great outdoors, with artists including Derek Cote, Gayle Stott Lowry and Karen Bell probing our relationship to nature with paintings, photos and installations. In the Upfront Gallery, textile artists Mary Kircher and Ann Roth break out the picnic blankets in Ellipse/Eclipse (through April 25), a joint show of dyed, woven tapestries. Their intricate patterns quicken with geometric jitters and give off a bright visual buzzan electric freshness. And faux-flowers burst forth in the Lobby Gallery, where you'll find Cautionary Tale (through April 25) by Stacy Bloom Rexrode, an artist whose middle name is also her favorite motif. It features in her paintings, as drippy floral wallpaper patterns, and lends its delicate form to various works in enamel or melted plastic—including, in this show, a mass of police tape wrought into a menacing bouquet. 6 p.m., free, 201 E. Davie St., Raleigh, 919-821-2787, www.artspacenc.org. —Brian Howe
