Widow, Eldritch Horror, Datura

When: Sat., Oct. 3, 9 p.m. 2015

At this point, Widow and Eldritch Horror could be considered retro. But Widow’s revival and revision of late-’70s power metal is faithful more in spirit than practice. The band’s neo-classical flourishes and self-aware approach revel in nostalgia. Eldritch Horror, who formed in the midst of death metal’s early waves, hasn’t changed much since reuniting in 2013. The purist death metal of this summer’s Untouched By the Sun is, in fact, a continuation of material first drafted in the ’90s. Still, it’s captured with an urgency that feels less revived than revitalized. —Bryan C. Reed
