Whitey Morgan & the 78s, Hearts & Daggers

When: Sat., Aug. 17, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8-10

You might call Whitey Morgan a country classicist. The Motown native loves vintage country, from George Jones' honky-tonk balladry to Cash and Haggard's outlaw ways. His booming, bottom-heavy vocals echo Waylon. All are name-checked in "If It Ain't Broke," as Morgan twists the ear of Nashville: "[It's] like the Hollywood of the South, so-called country singers singing songs they know nothing about." Morgan walks the thin line between homage and imitation, but he delivers it with enough heart and grit to earn the benefit of the doubt. Local openers Hearts & Daggers sate more rockabilly-inflected tastes. —Chris Parker
