Whiskey Smugglers

When: Fri., Aug. 26, 7-9 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

String band gone big band, Carrboro nine-piece the Whiskey Smugglers feature a slew of stringed instruments and heaps of ragged harmonies singing and sawing over rickety percussion. The result is a steaming cup of Americana brewed from the blended grounds of bluegrass, honky-tonk, country and folk. Plowing through those roots full-steam ahead with jubilance akin to modern string revivalists such as Old Crow Medicine Show, the high-spirited gang seems to be having too much fun to pay heed to the occasional missing member or two. The front porch action begins at 7 p.m. and is free. —Spencer Griffith
