West End Poetry Fest

When: Sat., Oct. 20, 12-9 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

The West End Poetry Festival continues to change from from year to year as different entities wrest control of it from each other. It began in 2004 as then-city poet laureate Patrick Herron's Carrboro Poetry Festival, mixing nationally recognized experimentalists with a constellation of locals. The current, renamed incarnation is run entirely out of the city's Parks & Recreation Department and focuses on the area's wealth of slam, lyric, cowboy and narrative poets. The one-day event kicks off with panels on topics such as publishing and social change. After an open mic and dinner, featured readers Alan Shapiro (whose Night of the Republic just received a National Book Award nomination) and current Carrboro Poet Laureate Jay Bryan take the stage. Other scheduled participants include Jaki Shelton Green, Dorianne Laux, Lou Lipsitz, Joseph Millar, the Sacrificial Poets and Andrea Selch. The event runs noon–9 p.m. at Carrboro Century Center; visit westendpoetsweekend.com for the full schedule.—Chris Vitiello
