When: Tue., Jan. 11, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Health care: Does anyone really understand it? We've seen massive strides forward in the past year, but damned if anyone can explain to me what actually happened. And there's quite a few who are still terrified of death panels. Wendell Potter, a former senior vice president of the insurance company CIGNA, exposed many of the misdeeds of the health care industry before the U.S. Senate in 2009, and now he's taken his crusade to print with the book Deadly Spin: An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR Is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans. Aside from having a mouthful of a title, the book explains "how relentless PR assaults play an insidious role in our political process anywhere that corporate profits are at stake—from climate change to defense policy." Potter will read from and sign copies of his book—and likely make you very, very angry in the process—at 7:30 p.m. —Zack Smith
