Price: $7-9

Weird Science, like almost all of John Hughes' high school-themed movies, is a total guilty pleasure, a puerile tale of the comeuppance of two horny nerds (Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith) after they build the "perfect woman" on a computer. A magical lightning storm brings this creation to life in a puff of smoke, and she appears in the form of model-actress Kelly LeBrock, a maternal, fairy godmother-type with Barbie doll proportions. Let's ignore the cringe-worthy sexism here and focus on the film's campy humor, which, even if it hasn't held up over time, is sure to induce lots of '80s-tinged nostalgia. Hughes followed up Weird Science with Ferris Bueller's Day Off, a film that is, without question, more deserving of its enduring popularity. Weird Science plays as part of Carolina Theatre's Evolution of the Groovy Movie Film Series. —Emma Miller
