Weedeater, Horseskull, Heathen Bastard

When: Sat., June 1, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10

Routed around an appearance at Maryland Death Fest, an annual headbanger's ball of global renown, Weedeater's Spring East Coast tour stops at the space that used to be Volume 11 Tavern. The band has been largely quiet since releasing 2010's Jason ... The Dragon. In more than 15 years as a band, the trio of bassist/growler "Dixie" Dave Collins, guitarist Dave "Shep" Shepherd and drummer Keith "Keko" Kirkum has released only four albums. Instead, the Wilmington-based sludgelords have proven themselves tenacious road warriors—but not without casualties. Between the drink and the drugs, the injuries and a famously blown-off big toe, Weedeater's reputation for mayhem precedes and occasionally supersedes them. That is, until they start playing: Then, it's an ocean trench of crackling grooves and blues primitivism cut with skull-scouring noise. Collins and Shepherd's towering amps and Kirkum's kit summon generations of bluesmen and Southern rockers gone mad. With Horseskull and Heathen Bastard. —Bryan C. Reed
