Chapel Hill
JESSE LACEY & KEVIN DEVINE
LOCAL 506—This solo tour featuring Brand New frontman Jesse Lacey sold out at lightning speed across the country, an indication as to how far the Long Island emo-popsters have come in six years. On their third album, The Devil & God Are Ranging Inside Me, Brand New—talented if overwrought—is thick, majestic and swooning, suggesting Billy Corgan and Conor Oberst collaborating for Drive Thru Records. Brooklyn singer-songwriter Kevin Devine's clever confessional folk-rock's earned Bright Eyes comparisons but is more a poor man's Elliott Smith, even receiving a hand from Smith's producer Rob Schnapf (XO, Figure 8) on last year's major label debut, Put Your Ghost to Rest. The show starts at 8:15 p.m., but get there early to beg. —Chris Parker

WRONGFUL EXECUTIONS
CHAPEL HILL PUBLIC LIBRARY—Sister Helen Prejean shot to public prominence when Susan Sarandon played her in Dead Man Walking, the movie version of her 1993 memoir. More recently, Prejean has written The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions. Today at 11:30 a.m., the reading group Books Sandwiched In will discuss Prejean's book. Call 968-2777 or visit www.chapelhillpubliclibrary.org for more information. —David Fellerath
