The Island
Manbites Dog Theater—The concept of a story-within-a-story being enacted by prisoners, so popular in works ranging from Kiss of the Spider Woman to Man of La Mancha, gets perhaps its ultimate iteration in Athol Fugard's classic anti-apartheid drama The Island. Based on a true story, the play is set within a prison clearly based on Robben Island in South Africa, where Nelson Mandela was once held. Two life inmates (Thaddaeus Edwards and LaMark Wright, recreating the roles originated by John Kani and Winston Ntshona), spend their evenings rehearsing the politically charged Greek tragedy Antigone, with their performances eerily paralleling the political and personal pressures they face in their grim reality. Considered one of Fugard's most powerful plays, The Island explores issues of social injustice and the challenges and power that come from resistance. It's a thought-provoking and deeply moving story that forces the audience to acknowledge some uncomfortable truths about the world they live in. Michael O'Foghludha directs the production, which is presented by the Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern. Tonight's pay-what-you-will preview begins at 8:15 p.m, followed by a fundraising performance Thursday and the regular engagement Sept. 5-7 and 10-13.
