Re: “Would single-sex academies in Wake be single-race too? And other notes from the District 6 debate

Want to get in on the 'inside' with Donna Williams, Bob? Then you should actually pay attention to WCPSS news. WRAL does live blog reporting from the work sessions/board meetings and Keung Hui reports all the latest news on his WakeEd Blog. Plenty of people knew that the assignment plan wouldn't be ready for a vote before the elections and they didn't learn it from insiders in the Republican party. You only learned of the single sex academies at the forum? The N&O ran an article on it Sept 7. If you're going to 'report' about WCPSS issues and the upcoming elections you might want to do your homework.

Re: “An analysis of the Wake school board race

You're missing the more interesting story here. Mansfield will draw votes from both Hill and Losurdo. There are a lot of people who are somewhat caught in the middle. They want to move towards neighborhood schools but they can't stand the new majority members and they are petrified of what ultra conservative Losurdo might do (she is against comprehensive sex ed, for example). On the other hand, you've got Hill who is resisting change at every turn without offering up any solutions or compromises of his own. Kevin's been an ineffective board member who has turned off plenty of parents by completely ignoring them and refusing to engage in discussion about legitimate issues. Even fans of the old diversity policy are frustrated with him.

So there's lots of people who see Mansfield as a great choice. All the common sense and none of the partisanship and strict adherence to ideology that the other two represent. Nobody is going to get 50% in this race so it will end up in a run-off.

Re: “An analysis of the Wake school board race

You didn't even mention the best candidate for District 3--Jennifer Mansfield. Are you that clueless or did you leave her out because you know she is a threat to Kevin Hill? Mansfield has proven herself over the past 6+ years as somebody who is non-partisan, willing to look the issues from all angles and uses facts to back up her positions. She has consistently advocated for all students in Wake County to have access to the best academic programs and for all parents, particularly low income, to have a voice in where their children are sent to school.

Hill holds on so tightly to his ideological beliefs that he leaves no room for any change or compromise. He voted against giving all students equal access to magnet programs, against efficiently using our yr seats by allowing all applicants in regardless of SES, and against allowing all qualified students to have access to the higher math track.

Hill is completely ineffective on the board and spends more time complaining about the majority members than he does offering solutions. Losurdo is a Tea Party hack who will vote however Margiotta tells her to. Mansfield is the clear choice and enjoys bi-partisan support. She will easily trouce either Hill or Losurdo in a run off.
