Watching the Planet

When: May 4-June 29 2014
Jan Dickey's new paintings and drawings look like a lot of things—and nothing. The Durham artist's oil, wax and paint abstractions, with their colorful folds, clouds and passages, could depict forms either coalescing or disassembling. The mystery of his exhibition Watching the Planet is only enhanced by this sanctuary setting. The Unitarian Universalist church at 106 Purefoy Road hangs works in the wall spaces where stained glass windows might normally be, offering a reminder that art and religion have a longstanding historical bond. After this reception, the show stays up until June 29. —Chris Vitiello
