Psych rock has its pitfalls. Perhaps owing to the specificity and amorphous forms of the subgenre, we see the sad proliferation of derivative acts such as Sleepy Sun. Though it's not a psychedelia-specific problem, it's especially tough in this genre because the songs can be so very long. But enough of that noise: Warpaint takes a tricky aesthetic and does it right. Maybe it's the mantric, groove-oriented cooperation between Jenny Lindberg's bass work and Stella Mozgawa's drumming. Maybe it's the three-part harmonies that bring in old-world folk mysticism without sacrificing rock grit. Ultimately, we should probably thank them for making a psych record that isn't crowded with extended guitar solos. PVT & Family Band open at 9:30 p.m. —Corbie Hill
