Warpaint, Liam Finn

When: Sat., Oct. 18, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $17-$20
Music described as atmospheric can lack a punch, meaning it’s great for a dinner party but not always engaging by itself. Los Angeles quartet Warpaint makes atmospheric music that demands to be heard—really heard—in a dark room. The band enlisted the kings of atmospheric production, Nigel Godrich and Flood, for their self-titled second album. Variations in style and tempo, invigorated playing and serpentine arrangements keep the seductive mood from being an end in itself. Frontwoman Theresa Wayman sometimes recalls Chan Marshall in her diaphanous vocals, and she can be no less arresting. —David Klein
